Week by week 72 hr. Kit

Here it is February already and I feel like I have been MIA for a long time. Okay, here is the long awaited list.  A week by week list to prepare for your 72 hr kits.
You can always double up on the weeks to get it done or go week by week, how ever you want to do it, doesn't really matter just that you are consistently working on it.

77 things that Stores run out of...

77 things that Stores run out of in an emergency situation.

I have been thinking more about preparedness again. With the storm Sandy that hit the East Coast, and all the devastation it caused, once more my thoughts have turned to how can I better prepare?
I came across this great post  from Self Reliance by Jamie of things that stores run out of quickly in an emergency.
Here are the top 10 items:

1. WATER
2. batteries
3. flashlights
4. ice
5. candles
6. matches
7. toilet paper
8. paper plates & paper towels
9. heavy duty aluminum foil
10. water filters

If you want the rest of the list click the link below.

I found a lot of the items at the $ store to jump-start the list.

You might have a lot of these items at home.  I have been selling things on our Facebook 24/7 yard sale site to buy the items on this list. It’s amazing all the stuff you collect and don’t really need.

Water is essential

Food Storage for the Clueless

I was at the library with my daughter. I couldn't find any of the books I normally read so, I looked for informative ones instead. I found "Food Storage for the Clueless" . When I showed Maren she said " Now you will have something to blog about." She is too funny.

On the cover of this book: How to build your food storage, even on a tight budget.
Ideas for collecting food that your family will actually eat.
Preparedness items you won't want to do without

It looks promising. So I am excited to be able to share some of the great ideas and recipes from this book.

Here's the kick off of my new blog

Here's the kick off of my new blog about food storage and how to start, jump start or just learn as you go food storage ideas, and yummy recipes to try.

I am not by all means the guru of food storage so by doing this blog I hope I will learn right a long side of you readers out there. I will be drawing upon the knowledge of many people who already know so much on this subject, and of course giving the credit to those ideas I borrow from. Because everyone loves getting praise.

So I will be taking candid pictures of my current food storage room, the good the bad and the ugly. It is my goal to have great before and after pictures to share with you.  If you are not inspired by the pictures you see well... let's just say right now it's really scary.
So my favorite new saying is "Don't judge me, help me."
I say this all the time to my neighbor when we go into my scary garage. It's a work in progress.
Well, let's just say the progress hasn't worked so much lately.
So stay tuned for those before pictures, because there's so much work to be done.
Just want to give a shout out to Maren (my talented daughter) who is the brains behind the design of this blog. I would probably be 90 years old trying to figure out how to get the background set up. Thanks Maren, you rock!
